I discovered that one of my first-year students is also a foreigner. I had suspected it since she has darker skin and a different appearance than many of the other students, but I wasn't sure. Her family is from the Phillipines and she doesn't read kanji apparently. She understands most Japanese. She is quite loud and eager to participate in English class, another characteristic that clearly sets her apart from the Japanese students, who are incredibly reserved and quiet all the time.
